About John Peaveler PDF Print E-mail
I grew up canoeing on rivers and lakes in upstate New York and central Alaska with my father, who led our family around America as a service member.  After I graduated from high school, I joined the Air Force and served four years, with little time for paddling.  One day, as I was nearing the end of my enlistment, I was sitting in Qatar during a four-month deployment, enjoying the sun and reading a copy of Outside magazine.  I came across an advertisement for an essay contest promising $10,000 to the person who wrote the most interesting essay about American Adventure and an adventure they would like to undertake.  I won that contest and, several months later, found myself sitting in a kayak in Skagway, Alaska, saying a silent prayer that kayaking was enough like canoeing for me to survive for the next 1200 miles.  I learned a few hard lessons along the way, but the most important thing I learned was that I love kayaking. as much as canoeing.  I love the thrill of a launch, the burn of a 12-hour paddling day, the puzzle of each night’s campsite, and the relief of every successful landing.  I love drifting along a coastline I’ve never seen before and will probably never see again, experiencing every inch of a place, constantly watching from my position just below the waterline.  I even love the cold salt spray and the driving rain; they make the day purely mine.

The Family

This site may make a bit more sense if I tell you a few more things about myself.  My family and I live in Kuwait, where we run the Kuwait Society for the Protection of Animals and Their Habitat or ( K'S PATH).  You will see that many of my training pictures are from Kuwait, where kayaking offers it's own challenges, like pollution, security, language barriers, heat, and especially irreverent boaters.  You may see that my SPOT tracking device is sometimes in a country even farther away.  We travel as much as we can, which is somewhat easier when you live in this part of the world.
As you look around, you'll also see tweets from here and there and the occasional article about this and that.  My wife and I love to travel, though when we're together its generally a little more normal than the crazy adventures I sometimes find myself on.  If you enjoy adventure and travel, I hope you'll find something you like on this site, and I'm always ready to take tips and advice.  Have something to say?  Leave a comment!

My wife, Ayeshah and our daughter, Dalal support me during all of my solo trips both emotionally, and by updating this website.

Enjoy!

John
